Newborn Screen Blood Test

Blood test helps health professionals to identify and treat these conditions before they make a baby sick. If your baby has one of these disorders and it is not found early, the baby can develop serious health problems. To monitor a baby's progress, sometimes the work will be required a number of times.

In babies, blood draws are sometimes done as a "heel stick collection."  The baby’s heel will be pricked to collect a small sample of blood after cleaning the area. The collectors usually get you to sit with the baby on your lap, then you grip them pretty firmly and they do it quick. They should be experienced in babies and kids. Newborn screen blood test checks for more than 36 different disorders such as sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies, cystic fibrosis, congenital hypothyroidism, inherited metabolic diseases, amino acid disorders, atty acid disorders, organic acid disorders, biotinidase deficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH),galactosemia,  severe combined immunodeficiency, and lysosomal storage diseases.

Usually, a blood sample is taken by a midwife between 48 and 72 hours after birth. If your baby has a positive screening result, you will be contacted and referred to a specialist for further testing.
