Crixas Mine

The Crixas mines are situated 3 km south of the city of Crix¨¢s in the Goias State of Central Brazil and it is 260 km northwest of Brasilia, the country's capital.Mining started in 1987 with ore being stockpiled on the surface. Development was largely completed by the end of 1989, enabling successful testing of the metallurgical circuit to take place through the fourth quarter of 1989. Initial dor¨¦ bullion associated with this testing was poured on November 14, 1989. Initial gold sales from the project occurred in January 1990. The Riacho dos Machados gold project is located 145 km by road northeast of the city of Montes Claros in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The 11,000 people town of Riacho dos Machados is about 25 km from the project.The mineral deposit was discovered in the 1970s by the Brazilian government in partnership with Vale (CVRD) in a region with no prior history of mining production. Vale open pit mined the oxidized part of the deposit in the period 1989-1997 and produced 155,000 oz gold from low grade (1.89 g/t) oxide ore.
