Glomerular Filtration Rate
Glomerular filtration rate(GFR)describes the flow rate of filtered fluid through the kidney. It shows how well the kidneys are filtering. Mild and moderate kidney injury is poorly inferred from serum creatinine alone. Doctors use estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to determine if you have kidney disease, and if so, what stage. In the U.S., an estimated 37 million adults may have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the necessary steps can be taken to protect their kidney function when detected early.

The CKD-EPI equation
In adults, the most widely-used equations for estimating GFR from serum creatinine are the CKD-EPI equation. It was developed in 2009 by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI),expressed as a single equation:

eGFRcr = 141 x min(Scr/κ, 1)α x max(Scr/κ, 1)-1.209 x 0.993Age x 1.012 [if female]x1.159 [if black]

where:
Scr = serum creatinine in mg/dL
κ = 0.7 (females) or 0.9 (males)
α = -0.241 (female) or -0.302 (male)
min(Scr/κ, 1) is the minimum of Scr/κ or 1.0
max(Scr/κ, 1) is the maximum of Scr/κ or 1.0
Age (years)

Stages of kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is divided into five stages:
Stage of CDK Estimated GFR What is means
Stage 1  90 or higher  Normal CKD
Stage 2  60-89  Mild CKD
Stage 3  30-59  Moderate CKD
Stage 4  15-29  Severe CKD
Stage5  14 or less   Kidney failuree or close to failure
