Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is an enzyme found mostly in the liver and kidney. It was originally referred to as serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). An ALT test measures the level of ALT in the blood.
High levels of alanine aminotransferase usually indicate a damaged liver. ALT is released into the blood, usually before more obvious signs of liver damage occur, such as jaundice. This makes ALT a useful test for early detection of liver damage.
