What is Target Heart Rate?

Keep your heart rate to stay in a certain zone, usually within 50 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate, working within this zone gives you the maximum health and fat-burning to receive the benefits of physical activity. This range is called your target heart rate.
Because of these factors, health experts have come up with a recommended heart rates for performing your exercise based on your target heart rate.

Calculate Target Heart rate zone
To perform fitness program you need to calculate your target heart rate zone. The measurement obtained varies based on age, level of fitness.But, because of the complexity of the test, most recommendations are based on estimates.
On this page, a widely used estimate is maximum heart rate. Another formula,  the Karvonen method of calculating your exercise heart rate, you need to take your pluse to measure your resting heart rate.

How to determine your resting heart rate
  • Prior to getting out of bed in the morning, take your pulse on your wrist or on the side of your neck
  • Count the number of beats for one minute
  • Take your resting heart rate three mornings and average the 3 heart rates together to get accuracy
